    Starbucks Cost per Cup

    Sebastian Restrepo

Background: Starbucks charges quite a bit for their coffees, and obviously makes a big profit off sales. How much does it cost Starbucks to heat up just the water in a cup of hot coffee?

    Constants needed:

    1L (Liter) = 1000mL (Milliliters)

    1000W (Watts) = 1kW (Kilowatts)

    1 minute = 1/60th of an hour = 0.05 hours

kWh = kW x time in hours = Kilowatt Hours

    1. Measure how much energy it takes to heat up water you need to Go into the main room of the Elab, measure out 1 liter. Pour that water into the water heater, start it up, and time how long the water takes to start boiling. Also, measure how many Watts the heater uses.

    2. Convert the units you got from #1 to use in the next question Convert the Watts to kW and the time to hours

    3. Get kWh Using the converted units, find how many kWh it takes to heat up 1L of water

    4. Calculate the cost of heating up water If you are in Hawaii, HELCO charges $0.50 per kWh for energy. How much does it cost to heat up 1L of water?

    5. How much for a Starbucks? If a Starbucks Venti is 710ml, how much does it cost to heat up the water used in it?

    (1000watts) x (minutes/60) x ($0.50)
